Acting Deputy Food Editor, Tesco (London)

Full time, maternity cover

Tesco magazine is looking for a talented Acting Deputy Food Editor to do a maternity cover. You’ll be working with the current Deputy Food Editor who is stepping up in the team, so you’ll have plenty of support around you.

The winning candidate will be a passionate foodie who knows how to turn minimal ingredients into inspiring dishes, and whether a cake will rise just by looking at the method.

You’ll be on top of food and drink trends and love brainstorming delicious food ideas as much as writing copy and getting stuck into the admin side of things.

We’re a fun, busy team that works at pace. This is a friendly environment and a great place to develop your skills, working on the country’s most-read magazine as well as contributing ideas to, and working with, our digital and commercial teams.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Writing food-related copy in the magazine, and assisting the Acting Senior Food Editor with commissioning, checking recipes, proofreading and editing.
  • Assisting the Acting Senior Food Editor with the day-to-day running of the food desk.
  • Being responsible for managing magazine recipe development alongside the Acting Senior Food Editor, working in collaboration to commission and edit all recipes and copy, and liaising with the art and subs teams.
  • Generating ideas and developing food features for the magazine and wider Tesco content ecosystem (including Tesco Real Food website, social and branded content), while responding to trends, reader feedback, seasonal research and insight and Tesco briefs.
  • Deputising for the Acting Senior Food Editor when required, in both internal and client settings.
  • Working alongside the Senior Writer to plan and write more technical food features.
  • Working closely with the Acting Senior Food Editor and Content Director (print) to plan content ideas and recipes for the magazine.
  • Liaising with home economists, commissioning recipes and raising POs for recipe writers.
  • Compiling ingredients checks for each recipe, updating the spreadsheet for account management, monitoring category responses and suggesting alternative ingredients where necessary.
  • Checking and editing recipe copy, working closely with the Acting Senior Food Editor and the subs team to ensure all pages are produced to the highest standard and recipe GDAs are acceptable.
  • Editing food and product stories/pages, including proofreading layouts and final reads.
  • Planning and writing some of the more technical food features alongside the Senior Writer.
  • Working with the wider Tesco team to brainstorm quarterly content ideas.
  • Monitoring competitor publications and social media to spot trends.

If you are interested in applying please send your CV and covering letter to hannah.emery@cedarcom.co.uk by the 8th February 2023.
